Temporarily Suspended...

This was an email service which was emailing pages from Hindu Dharma and from Deivatthin Kural on a daily/weekly basis.

This service is unavailable till further notice. The inconvenience is regretted. Please see below for details:

  1. Why has this service stopped all of a sudden?

A couple of weeks back, kamakoti.org ended up being listed on an "anti-spam" hit list as a spammer. Looking at logs and various traffic, we were led to beleive that the email address that was used to send out these automated emails automailer@kamakoti.org, ended up with a spamtrap (for more details see Wikipedia )
In order to effectively monitor some logs, we had to temporarily stop the service.

  2. How was this mailing list managed by kamakoti.org?

Visitors to the web site, when interested, would fill out an online form, specify some details, including frequency of receiving emails, their name, email address, and so on.
Once this was done, the web page would email them a randomly generated number and with a hyperlink into the web site which would have this number. Only when the user confirms subscription to the mailing list in such a way was he/she added to the distribution list.
An automated task would, each day, crawl through our database and send each person an individually addressed email. Thus, it was very much a mailing list in a closed loop.
We did an audit of this process and concluded that there was nothing wrong with our scripts that were sending out the automated emails. Neither us, nor our service provider were able to determine how did we end up in a spamtrap.

  3. When is this service going to be resumed?

We take this opportunity to remind those on our mailing list that all the pages that were being emailed out are also always present on the web site. The email service was just a facilitator.
The size of our mailing list has virtually exploded over the past few years. When we audited the above process of sending the emails, we realised that we were really taxing the email server. We have been requested to look at alternate means of sending the emails rather than the one we had implemented.

Our volunteers are working on it. As of now, we don't have a clear solution yet as we are still testing out various possibilities. As soon as we have more information, we will share it on this page and also on the following new mailing lists that have been created.

We have started three conventional mailing lists. All those who were on our various mailing lists before have been manually added to the following:
