॥अम्बरीषगीता॥
Ambarisha Gita

Ambarisha was a king, who speaks here of the evil nature of desires and the glory of Atma Svarajya.


समुदीर्णेषु दुष्टेषु बाध्यमानेषु साधुषु ।

जग्राह तरसा राज्यं अम्बरीषो महायशाः ।।

When evil forces grew and the virtuous were troubled, the celebrated Ambarisha quickly took hold of the kingdom.

स निगृह्यात्मनो दोषान् साधून् समभिपूज्य च ।

जगाम महती सिद्दिं गाथाश्चेमा जगाद ह॥

He subdued his own vices, worshipped the virtuous and attained great Siddhi; he then sang these verses.

भूयिष्ठं विजिता दोषाः निहतास्सर्वशत्रवः ।
एको दोषो वरिष्ठश्च वध्यः स न हतो मया ॥
Vices were largely subdued by me; all enemies were destroyed. But one important vice, that deserves to be eliminated, was not killed by me.

यत्प्रयुक्तो जन्तुरयं वैतृष्ण्यं नाधिगच्छति ।
तृष्णार्त इह निम्नानि धावमानो न बुध्यते ॥
Driven by that vice, man fails to attain freedom from desire. Miserable with desire, he runs after lowly objects here; he does not see Gnana.

अकार्यमपि येनेह प्रयुक्तः सेवते नरः।
तं लोभमसिभिस्तीक्ष्णैः निकृत्य सुखमेधते ॥
Man does prohibited acts, propelled by greed. By cleaving off that greed by sharp swords, he attains happiness.


लोभाद्धि जायते तृष्णा ततश्चिन्ता प्रवर्तते ।
स लुप्यमानो लभते भूयिष्ठं राजसान् गुणान् ॥
From greed arises strong desire, then follows anxiety. Thus overcome by greed, he develops Rajoguna (if he attains the desired object) and Tamoguna (if he fails to attain the object) in plenty.


स तैर्गुणैः संहतदेहबन्धनः पुनः पुनर्जायति कर्म चेष्टते ।
जन्मक्षये भिन्नविकीर्णदेहो मृत्युं पुनर्गच्छति जन्मनैव ॥
He, having those qualities ingrained in the body (mind), is born again and again and performs karmas. When the time for this birth is coming to a close, his body gets disheveled and he embraces death again; this cycle was propelled by birth.

तस्मादेतं संयगवेक्ष्य लोभं विहाय धृत्याऽऽत्मनि राज्यमिच्छेत् ।
स्वराज्यं ................... राज्यं आत्मैव राजा विदितो यथावत् ॥
Therefore, understanding this fully well, one should abandon greed with determination and seek kingdom in his own Atman. He should attain Svarajya, kingdom in Atman. The king realized the truth that the kingdom is indeed Atman only.
